As part of our Ignite for Impact awards Dr Patrick Mitchell was granted €20,000 towards the development of a Remote Medical Technology Platform for patients with severe asthma. The team created the Asthma Wearables Project to help monitor and record patient outcomes.
The first patients were recently enrolled in a 6-month study. The study provides a wearable device allowing patients to measure and record their sleep patterns, pulse rate, activity monitoring, lung function and PROMs [patient-recorded outcome measures]. The wearable will also provide a retrospective and objective dataset of how the patient was doing over the preceding months facilitating the detection of significant changes in the patient's condition using the data from the wearable and PROMs.
This study is the first of its kind in Ireland and will continue into 2025 with additional patients being enrolled on a regular basis.
Dr. Mitchell said: “This improved self-management of asthma by patients tracking their sleep and activity, reminding patients to adhere to their treatments plans and completing PROMs enables long-term data collection, which is crucial for understanding triggers and patterns in asthma symptoms over time. This has not been done in Ireland. Enrolling the first patient was thrilling!!”
